A family day out @Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

9th March 2012:

As a surprise for my mother’s birthday we treated her to a surprise trip to Kew. It was a really good opportunity to make the most of my relatively new macro lens, although it was a pretty dull day, so I could have done with taking a tripod. But I don’t think the rest of my family would have appreciated the time I would have spent dawdling if I’d have been using a tripod!

But I think I did a good job of making the most of what I had and was pleased with some of the photos. The macro lens proved to be a fantastic help, especially when I came across a bumble bee – although he wasn’t particular keen and was moving around so fast it was quite tricky to good a good shot!

I think this selection of images really shows the variety of photogenic material at Kew, where an enormous array of natural forms and colours as well as those resulting from human interaction with nature come together to form a visual feast!

The shots in the aquarium weren’t all that great, but I wanted to include them just to add that dimension of interest.
